Lesson Plan: Three Dimensional Shapes

Overview:  Through this lesson my students will be learning the different types of three-dimensional shapes. This is a very important concept for students to learn because once they get into the higher grade levels, they will eventually start to learn how to measure the volume and size of the shapes. These shapes are like cones, cylinders, and cubes. These are all shapes that they will find in the real world and will need to understand how to measure them.

Materials and Resources:

  • Worksheets
  • 3D printed sphere, cylinder, cube, cone, square prism, triangular prism.
  • Smart Board
  • 3D printing supplies
  • Colors
  • Glue

Instruction

a.       Introduction

Day 1: To begin this lesson I will ask my students if they can tell me what a three-dimensional shape is. I will take a few minutes and wait for their responses. If no one can tell me then I will tell them that a three-dimensional shape is a shape that has three different dimensions to be measured, height, width, length. Then I will tell my students how this is different from two dimensional shapes because you only have two things to measure.

Day 2: To begin this lesson I will first talk to my students about what we learned the day before about cones, cylinders. and spheres. After that I will tell them that today we are going to talk about our last three shapes that are part of this unit. I will tell them that these shapes will be a cube, triangle prism, and square prism.

b.      Instructional Process

Day 1:

Activity 1:

At this time I will get out my cone, sphere, and cylinder that I printed out of the 3D printer before class. The students will then pass these shapes around the room for about five minutes and look at the different things about them. Once all my shapes have returned back to me, I will start by pulling out the sphere. I will then tell my students what this shape is and then ask them to tell me what two dimensional shape it reminds them of. I will give them a minute to tell what they think it is and then I will tell them that a circle is the closest. Next, I will ask my students to tell me what is different about a sphere from a circle? As they give me their ideas, I will write them on the board and then I will talk to them about how a sphere is round and a circle in flat. (Visual Spatial, Linguistic, Kinesthetic)

Activity 2:  Next, I will pull out the cylinder.  I will then tell my students what this shape is and then ask them to tell me what two-dimensional shape it reminds them of. I will give them a minute to tell what they think it is and then I will tell them that a oval is the closest. Next, I will ask my students to tell me what is different about a cylinder from a oval? As they give me their ideas, I will write them on the board. Finally, we will talk about what the different things that are in life that are cylinders. Such as a coffee can and oatmeal container. Then I will explain to my students how we fill these with things and how ovals would just be flat. (Visual Spatial, Linguistic)

Activity 3: Our last shape of the day will be a cone. I will pull out the cone and tell my students what the name of it is. Then I will ask my students what two-dimensional shape that this reminds them of. Then I will take their guesses for a while and then tell them that it is kind of like a circle and triangle to together. We will then discuss how it is different from the circle and triangle. Next I will ask them what life items might be cone shaped. They will have three minutes to give me some ideas and I will also contribute some as well. (Visual Spatial, Linguistic)

Day 2

Activity 1:  At this time, I will take out my cube, triangle prism and square prism models that I previously printed from my 3D printer and pass them around the room. The students will pass these around for five minutes and look at the different things about the shapes. After the shapes have returned back to me then I will hold up the cube. I will then tell my students that this a cube and then ask them to tell me what two-dimensional shape that it reminds them of. I will listen to their ideas and then tell them that it is close to a square. We will then take this time for the students and I to discuss what the different item in our lives that our cubes. I will then explain to them how a cube is able to be filled, but a square is not. (Visual Spatial, Linguistic, Kinesthetic)

Activity 2: Next, I will hold up a triangle prism. I will tell my students that this is a triangle prism and ask them to tell me what two-dimensional shape it reminds them of. I will then listen to their answers and then I will tell them that it would be closest to a triangle. Then we will talk about what in our lives would be in the shape of a triangle prism. We will talk about these for a while and then we will move on to our last shape. (Visual Spatial, Linguistic)

Activity 3: Our final shape will be a square prism. I will hold up the square prism and tell my students what it is. Then I will ask my students to tell me what shape two-dimensional shape that it reminds them of. I will listen to their answers and then I will tell them that it is like a triangle. Then we will talk about what in our lives would be in the shape of a square prism. (Visual Spatial, Linguistic)

Activity 4: The students will get their chrome books out and we will play a game of kahoot. This kahoot will be over three dimensional and two dimensional shapes. After we are done with this I will hand out their worksheet. (Visual Spatial, Linguistic, Kinesthetic)

Activity 5: The students will work on their worksheets. This worksheet will have then color and sort two dimensional shapes from three dimensional shapes. https://www.learningyay.com/first-grade/two-or-three-dimensional-shapes-worksheet/(Visual Spatial, Linguistic)

c.       Closure

At the end of day two we will look over their worksheets and then review on what a three-dimensional shape is. Then I will ask them to tell me a few of the shapes that we went over the last two days.

Assessment

I will assess my students learning by grading their worksheets. This will allow me to see what they learned from the last two days of learning.

  1. Brianna, I loved your Lesson Plan. Very well organized, great integration of the all materials for the students, and apps. I think this lesson will be great for the students that are tactile, vision, and kinetic learners. I really enjoy reading it, I can't wait for you to get to do it in class!

  2. Great lesson plan Brianna! The 3D shapes are hard to learn and teach when you only have paper to do it. This is a great way to incorporate the 3D printing. This will help the students learn this a lot easier and it hands-on. Your Kahoot is a great way to see if students understand what a 3D shape is.

  3. This is a great lesson plan over shapes. Having the 3D shapes to go with the lesson plan makes it easier for them to learn. What I really liked about this lesson plan is that you can relate the shapes to real life. This makes it a fun learning experience for the students. They can look around the classroom to see what they can find.

  6. This lesson about three dimensional shapes so innovative and productive. You did a great job presenting it to the class. I really enjoyed how you used the Kahoot! as a quiz. Great job

  7. I like how you broke up the three dimensional shapes into separate lessons that were focused on the 2d shape. Breaking down the lesson really simplifies the shapes enough for the students to truly grasp the concepts of each shape.
